Iniskea North Island Guided Day Visit

Location : Blacksod Pier (An Fód Dubh), The Mullet peninsula, northwest Mayo.
Level : Easy
Duration : approx. 7 hours (pier to pier).
iniskea north island guided visit
Description :
This beautiful little island lies 4 km west of The Mullet peninsula, beyond Belmullet (Béal an Mhuirthead), but is some 12km and 1 hour from Blacksod pier. Abandoned since the 1930s, this tranquil spot is now home to seabirds and grey seals, ruined houses, early Christian remains, monuments and wildflowers.
The boat ride out is a pleasure in itself, as we look out for dolphins and more. Walking on the island is taking a step back in time, as we recount how the islanders once lived and what caused them to abandon their homes nearly a century ago. A trip to Iniskea is a truly fascinating, peaceful and memorable day out, filled with stories of the past.
Please allow around 90 minutes to get to Blacksod pier (signposted An Fód Dubh) from Castlebar, Westport or Ballina. You will drive through Bangor Erris and then Belmullet (Béal an Mhuirthead). The boat, which has a capacity of 12 passengers, leaves at 10.00 and typically returns to the pier around 17.00.

JOMO Weekend on The Mullet Peninsula @ Blacksod (An Fód Dubh)
Jun 25 – Jun 28 all-day

JOMO Weekend, three days of fabulous walking in northwest Mayo, takes place over the last weekend of June. The Mullet Peninsula occupies this far corner of Mayo – a spectacular landscape dominated by the wild North Atlantic, boasting high sea cliffs, low-lying field systems, seemingly never-ending beaches and stunning offshore islands.

For this JOMO Weekend – Joy of Missing Out – we get back to loving the landscape around us, enjoying our walks and chats and not feeling the need to Google everything … Your phone is your camera, but no longer your endless web browsing master!

Day Two : Boat trip out to the wonderful, evocative Iniskea South Island, deserted since the 1930s and now home to seabirds and wildlife. (5km loop walk)

Day Three : Walking The Mullet peninsula, with its fabulous beaches and views to take the breath away. Visits along the way to a ruined medieval abbey in a stunning location, a holy well by the sea and more. (20km linear walk)

For this walking weekend, we stay in one of the finest B&Bs on the Wild Atlantic Way, where we enjoy 3 B&B nights. It happens to be located right beside a great West of Ireland pub.
