Iniskea south island guided visit
Description :
This beautiful little island lies 4 km west of The Mullet peninsula, beyond Belmullet (Béal an Mhuirthead). Abandoned since the 1930s, this tranquil spot is now home to seabirds and grey seals, ruined houses, wildflowers and the remains of its once thriving whaling station.
The 30 minute boat ride out is a pleasure in itself, as we look out for dolphins and more. Walking on the island is taking a step back in time, as we recount how the islanders once lived and what caused them to abandon their homes. A trip to Iniskea is a truly fascinating, peaceful and memorable day out, filled with stories of the past.
Please allow around 90 minutes to get to Blacksod pier (signposted An Fód Dubh) from Castlebar, Westport or Ballina. You will drive through Bangor Erris and then Belmullet (Béal an Mhuirthead). The boat, which has a capacity of 12 passengers, leaves at 10.00 and typically returns to the pier around 17.00.

    Is lunch provided??

    • Barry Murphy said on January 5, 2018 at 13:36:

I’m afraid not, Marie. Along with sun cream, hat, rain gear and water, you should also bring along a packed lunch. Regards, Barry.

If you are 63 on a invalidity pension is it 50 euro I have a free travel pass but I do alot of walking
    What distance are you planning

    • Barry Murphy said on January 26, 2018 at 12:27:

Hi Mary, I’m afraid that is the price, yes. Total walking is very little, as the island is really quite small. You’d be talking about maybe 4km. However, some of the terrain can be a little rough and there is one slope down the side of a modest hill.

Would we be allowed bring a small dog or is it best to leave him at home? Thanks

    • Barry Murphy said on January 31, 2018 at 18:14:

Hi Joe, I’m afraid the dog will need to stay at home, yes. The island has sheep grazing, so dogs are not permitted, sorry.
