Ciorcal Cheathrú Thaidhg – Cliff Top Walk

The cliff top walk at Carrowtigue (An Ceathrú Thaidhg) is the finest in Mayo and all of Connacht.

 

Guided walking, Carrowteige, Mayo, Ireland

The Stags of Broadhaven

Location : Carrowtigue village, north Mayo.

Level : Easy to moderate, with one short steep section.

Duration : 3 to 4 hours.

Description : Leaving Carrowtigue, we skirt along the wonderful sand dunes at Rinroe Point before reaching the low cliffs. Higher and spectacular cliffs await us beyond, with magnificent views of the North Atlantic and The Mullet Peninsula. There is great birdlife to be seen along the route, culminating in beautiful views of the Stags of Broadhaven – sea stacks some 3 km off shore to the north. An excellent loop walk.

Family Fun Orienteering

Level : Easy
Duration : Approx. 2 - 3 hours.
Description : A fun day out for all the family, Family Fun Orienteering is a great way to get the children outdoors for the afternoon. Search for the markers and interact with nature while you’re at it!

There is a charge of Euro 20 per family.

Nephin Mór Hillwalk

Nephin under Snow

Nephin is Connacht’s second highest mountain, offering superb views in all directions from its central location in Mayo. Just outside the small village of Lahardane and towering above Lough Conn to 806m, Nephin is more a large mound than a pointed peak. Nevertheless, it offers a great day of hillwalking, of around 4 to 5 hours duration.

Come along and enjoy a great day’s hillwalk up the mountain. Reaching the top is a great feeling and the views, when it’s clear, are wonderful. Do please let me know by e-mail, contact form or phone, on 086-8318748, if you’d like to join, as numbers are limited for this mountain hike.

Iniskea South Island

Iniskea South Island

Location : Blacksod Pier (An Fód Dubh), The Mullet peninsula, northwest Mayo.
Level : Easy
Duration : approx. 6 hours (pier to pier).
Description :This beautiful little island lies 4 km west of The Mullet peninsula, beyond Belmullet (Béal an Mhuirthead). Abandoned since the 1930s, this tranquil spot is home to seabirds and grey seals, ruined houses and the remains of its once thriving whaling station.

The 20 minute boat ride out is a pleasure in itself, as we look out for dolphins and more. Walking on the island is taking a step back in time, as we recount how the islanders once lived and what caused them to abandon their homes. A trip to Iniskea is a truly memorable day out, filled with stories of the past.

Please allow around 90 minutes to get to Blacksod pier (signposted An Fód Dubh) from Castlebar or Westport.

Walking The Bangor Trail

Location : Letterkeen Wood, near Newport, west Mayo.
Level : Moderate
Duration : Approx. 4 - 6 hours.
Description : The Bangor Trail, which is the most remote walking trail in Ireland, takes us into the very heart of rural, wild and rugged Mayo. This is Atlantic blanket bog and Nephin Beg mountains country.

The Bangor Trail is a fascinating and wonderful old trail, full of history, dating from a time when the vast swathes of North-West Mayo were not yet reached by road. As a means of moving animals down to the market towns of West Mayo, it meanders through the Nephin Beg mountains and makes for a great day’s walking.

Clonbur & Cong Woods

Location :

 

 

Clonbur village (An Fhairche), near Ballinrobe, south Mayo.

 

 

 

Level : Easy

Duration : approx. 5 - 6 hours.

Description : A lovely gentle walk through native woodland, along Lough Mask’s shoreline and taking in the “Mini Burren” of limestone pavement, a ruined castle, caves and wetland habitats.

 We walk along an old forest track, created for the Guinness family of Ashford Castle, allowing them to take a day trip by carriage along the shore of Lough Mask and through the forest.
 
 The walk is entirely flat, with no rises of any note.
